MBA Victory

It was one of those lovely springtime afternoons, the campus all atwitter with the hustle and bustle of warm-weather sport, and the JV Reds hosted STEM Prep, an opponent that needs no introduction, thanks to Sayan's scouting report in assembly yesterday.

There was to be no April Foolin' in this contest, as the teams set into pitched battle right away. It was largely a (very physical) chess match in the first half, with each side probing and feeling out the opponent. STEM kept their attackers high and our defense busy, but we held firm and looked for an opening.

The opening, though, was to come from the opponent, who kept up that high pressure and jumped on a lateral pass to take a lead early in the second half. That goal against proved galvanizing, though, and the Reds redoubled their efforts. Only minutes after the STEM goal, Brooks Nowell took on his defender with strength and speed and spanked the ball far post with his right foot. The keeper got a hand to it, but you can't stop what you can't see: 1-1.

The game wore on, both teams feeling the late afternoon low-sun heat, but the Reds kept pushing. The breakthrough finally came with about ten minutes left: Ian Baldwin, first-half-goalkeeper-turned-journeyman-attacker, heaved a long throw-in across the STEM box. Michael "Mike the Bike" Spengler leapt highest to flick it on, and then, miraculously, the Bike got on the end of his own header to push the ball past the keeper. Absolute scenes ensued.

The lads were buzzing after this competitive, come-from-behind win, and we hope to take that momentum into the later game this week against the dread rival CPA.

Final Score: MBA 2-1 STEM Pre
