Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and regional, state and national tournaments. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of twenty-three individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Students in grades 7-9 compete at the Division B level. Those in grades 9-12 compete at the Division C level. Each team needs 15 members with varied interests and talents. Boys do not have to be an “A” student to be successful. Enthusiasm and ability to commit and follow through on a task are what matter most.
HOW DOES SCIENCE OLYMPIAD WORK AT MBA AND WHEN DOES IT MEET?
Students choose to participate on the team and request events according to their particular interests. The coaches and team captains work to satisfy as many of those requests as possible. Preparation begins in the Fall as soon as the official event rules are released. The coaches will announce organizational meetings and some work periods. Mostly, the boys work on projects independently in their free time either at school (before school, lunch, break, study halls) or at home.
HOW HAS MBA DONE IN COMPETITION?
MBA’s Division C team has competed at the Regional and State level for the since 2003. |
