Return of the JS Tennis No Mercy™ Squad

MBA wins their first JS Tennis match of the season 3-2 against a talented Tigers squad from Ensworth.
After a competitive fortnight of tryouts and new ranking determinations, the JS tennis No Mercy Squad™ reconvened today at the John Bell Keeble Tennis Center to dole out what it doles out best: absolutely no mercy.

Old hands returning this year include Alp Weitkamp, Robert Hobart, Shaun Xu, Cole Anderson, Jude Bonvissuto, Armaan Singhvi, Wells Rick, Will Harris, and Grey Gaston. New seventh-grade recruits: Charlie Nord, Ricky Reynolds, Christopher Topping, Max Schlosser, and Merritt MacGaw.

Today's [Ens]worthy opponents: Ensworth. Each match was first to eight games.

Our third singles seed, Shaun 'Silent But Deadly' Xu, was first to finish his match with a no-messing-around 8-0 dispatch of his shocked and despondent opponent. I think Shaun must have been hungry for a packet of those tasty Cheddar Goldfish Baked Crackers that the Reynolds family had kindly provided as part of their generous match teas today (thank you to the Reynolds family!), because he was obviously in a rush.

Next to finish was our second singles seed, Robert 'RoboHob' Hobart, with a solid and unwavering demolition of 8-3. Reminiscent of scenes from The Terminator. Robert then joined Shaun in the bleachers for some Cheddar Goldfish. Yum.

Our first singles seed, Alp 'Kyrgios' Weitkamp, was meanwhile taking his time on Court One, with an epic match that took around eighty minutes - although he fought hard and ferociously, firing out confident forehand rockets from the baseline for well over an hour, he eventually succumbed to a strong and sturdy opponent, 4-8. Sterling effort.

In a mirror of the above score, our second doubles pair of Charlie 'No Backing Down' Nord and Ricky 'Relentless' Reynolds, came back heroically from 0-3 down to finally take their match 8-4. A nail-biting comeback, and a good reminder to never give in.

Although our second doubles plair of Cole 'Ice Cole' Anderson and Max 'Maximum Overdrive' Schlosser fought valiantly in their first ever match together, their last-minute comeback was cut short at 4-8.

Final HVAC match score: MBA: 3 - Ensworth: 2

Good stuff. However, having detailed all of the above, today's Man of the Match Award must go to feisty eighth-grader, Jude 'Bonzai!' Bonvissuto, for playing an epic exhibition match against an equally stubborn opponent which went on for so long that it may well have broken JS tennis history - breaking one and a half hours to end out at 91 minutes with Jude winning on a dramatic tiebreak 7-5, to a scene reminiscent of 1960s Beatlemania as the crowd cheered and shrieked, "Hey Jude!”

Congrats to the boys on a first-class job at their first match back. Coach Bromfield has put together another crack team of court-cavorting clinicians.
