Note: Hockey is a fall and winter sport at MBA. As soon as school starts, we will augment weekly skating with off-ice conditioning (lifting, running in Warner Park, etc.) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 3:15-4:30pm.
Beginning mid-October, 2013 through February, 2014 we will generally practice on Mondays and Thursdays after school at Centennial SportsPlex. But, we will have some late practices at A-Game, and late games on school nights, so plan accordingly. I expect we will play regular season games on Wednesday and Friday evenings again this season.
We expect to play our last varsity game before Winter Break on 12/6/2013. Mid-term exams are 12/9/2013 – 12/17/2013. Winter Break is 12/18/2013 – 1/6/2014. The Alumni game is 12/20/2013 (tentative date). The regular season ends mid February, 2014. Play-off games are played in February, and we anticipate the State Championship Tournament to conclude by mid March, 2014.
After summer events, transition to a Pre-Season Focus:
Complete player, coach and team registration by September 1, 2013.
Commitment to team rules referenced in Player Handbook.
Concussion base line testing.
Build endurance, stay healthy, no injuries.
Develop skills, learn “systems” for pressure, trap, power play and short handed.
Scrimmages, and Pre-season, Tune-up Tourney at A-Game: Sept. 27-29.
Establish team identity, positions, lines, varsity roster
Select Captains
Remain academically eligible (1MQ – September 13, 2013)
In-Season Focus:
Remain healthy, and eligible. (No issues with academic probations, behavior, disciplinary committee, no drugs/alcohol, or honor council.
Balance obligations of family, academics, and sports.
Phase in returning players from XC, golf, crew, and football.
Objective is to all players practice, but only activate 15-18 plus 2 goalies for each varsity game.
We will play in the NYHL High School JV league (not associated with GNASH). We expect the JV team will be made up of 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th line players, eligible 8th graders, plus others who need more playing time, and if their academic demands can handle it.
I encourage 7th and 8th graders to play for their house/ travel Peewee/Bantam teams, yet 8th graders are allowed with league and parent approval. Concern is allowing for academic demands given playing for 2 teams.
Any questions?
Thank you for coming, and for your interest in MBA hockey! Always feel free to contact MBA Director of Hockey Operations and Coach - David Deutsch, email: david.deutsch@montgomerybell.edu.
